You can turn the plugs on the back to horizontal or vertical to fit you wall plug outlet. Otherwise just pop in a scent bottle into the bottom of the lantern and plug it in! Start on the smallest dot and move it up according to how intense you want the smell! I have 5 of them!!

You can plug it in without a scent plug and it lights up. It is very pretty. I hope this answers your question
