Short Answer: yes, long answer: it depends. I live in the South, I'm one of the folks who mosquitoes love the smell/taste of, and 2 out of 3 surrounding neighbors have decorative ponds (read: I can't step outside without skeeters coming for me within 30 seconds except months with that end with "-ary", AND I've tried lots of products to keep them away). IF I set up the candle and start it burning about 10 minutes before I go outside they will mostly leave me alone so long as I stay close to it. I'd say it really only covers a radius of about 8-10 feet, but I have much fewer problems and I don't mind having the candle near me, like on the table even, while I'm eating because it it has a soft fruity smell, NOT burning rotten lemons. Now usually I can't abide the smell of citronella candles, so I can't speak as to how well you'd expect a citronella candle to work "normally" but I think this works better than the passive systems that use clay pots and oils, light systems that are supposed to trap and kill them but only really get moths, or the smoke from a BBQ grill that can't keep them away from your legs and results in you breathing tons of smoke. I'd say it's about equal to having the good bug bands (when they're fresh) on both an arm and a leg. If you need 100% protection or are going for camping trip in a full-on swamp, you will likely need DEET and protective clothing, but if you're looking to use your back patio without bloodsuckers in your face, this will probably do the job.

No. Do not burn them in your home. Citronella is for outdoors when the oil is used in candles.

The container bottom is painted metal, and the lid wood. You can use the lid for a coaster actually. As for reuse-ability, I mean you could use it as a mini planter for some succulents (no drainage though) or refill it with wax yourself to make another candle? but the top curves in so it's limited uses.
