You leave the melt cup in the container. If you break the wax up, it will get very messy when melted. The melt cup is a stronger scent then the candle.

On the meltcups does the wax actually melt or does the smell just disapate?

The wax will not burn away, just the fragrance. When you cannot smell the scent any longer please switch to a new scent.
